The
10th Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race got underway this
morning at 11:00 in a brisk 18-21 knot southerly breeze. Peter Harburg’s VOR70,
Black Jack led Wild Oats XI briefly before the Oatley Family’s 100 foot Reichel
Pugh super-maxi charged out of Moreton Bay with one thing on her mind, and one
thing only, the race record for line honours.

Alive,
the Tasmanian RP 62 owned by Duncan Hines and crewed by some of the Apple Isle’s
finest sailors including Moth Champion, Rob Gough, sat right on their tail in
what was the windiest start in the history of the race and certainly the most
spectacular for competitors and spectators alike.

, 22 minutes and 20 seconds and is estimated to cross the finish line at Keppel Bay at 3:38 am on Saturday August 6.

So
far the race has claimed two casualties. Ragtime retired with mainsail damage
and returned to Brisbane while the DK46 Dekadence dismasted and luckily
survived with no hull damage. The crews aboard each yacht are safe.

Conditions in the seas around Brisbane can be rather unpredictable but by the looks of the race, it just might prove to be the right circumstances they need to do well in this run!
