What The Sailors Said - 52 Super Series, Copa del Ray Mapfre - Day 2

Francesco Mongelli (ITA) Navigator Bronenosec (RUS):

“This year it looks like we have quite a good feeling on the coastal races. We went on the water today with the aim of getting back some of what we lost yesterday, it was not such a good day for us. We were happy to prove to ourselves that we are good enough.

"We were pushing on the left on the second beat. I think that the speed of our boat helped a lot on today’s race. When you add the total miles up it woul be closer to 40 and so it was a long, long race but we were OK. We enjoy the sailing and that kind of race.

"In the coastal there are a few things that are more important, like speed and the general plan. We are not so, so good on the windward leewards on the dynamics, the mark roundings, that is just one idea. I think our full package is good, the boat, the mast, the sails is all working well and we are fast.”

“Everybody had their opportunities to win that race. Bronenosec sailed a very good second beat to get themselves into the lead. Platoon sailed well 60 per cent of the time. The gains came in so many funny different ways.

"We ripped our A2 on the second to last run and had had to cut a super halyard so we could not peel. We made it all the way down with a hole about two metres down the centre of it. And so on the last run Dalton and the guys just did really good work keeping us going. We had the smaller kite up and Platoon were going really well and we still won the last exchange with them. It was a lot of work for a very well earned, hard fought second place.

"I can’t fault our guys. This is just day three of Dalton and I sailing together and I give them high marks for sticking with it. It was very, very hard. Doug hops on tomorrow and off we go.”
