What The Sailors Said Back At The Dock - Copa del Rey - Day 6

Ado Stead (GBR) Tactician Rán Racing:

“We knew that with just one race they would come looking for us and so it was a case of trying to minimise the damage. We managed to chase them into the start line with 15 seconds to burn. We needed probably 10 or 15 seconds so we could give them a push rather than them control us.

"We just missed it by five or ten seconds. We were forced off to the right and thought we would have a go out there. We got through to fourth. After that start we were looking for something on the right. We have won the most races out of the fleet.

"We have achieved many top threes. What we have to work on is just being that bit more consistent. A sixth and seventh earlier in the week hurt us and if we could have gone in today level or ahead, who knows? We are pleased with where we are in the season, we are not too far behind Quantum going in to Ibiza. We have put a few more points on Azzurra. We are pleased.”

“This time was the hardest. I have done this regatta three times. Once I steered Desafio and twice I have done tactics on Quantum Racing and all three have had the same result. And this one was by far the hardest. We lead a lot of times at the top mark and Rán would pass us.

"They have a nice boat and they understand the boat and its modes and the interesting thing about racing on this course with the Maxi boats is that the courses are two or three tenths of a mile longer than those which we are normally using.

"And that allows them a pretty good opportunity to reel us all in. And today we sailed above our sweet spot and we went away from them downwind. It is a little bit of a game of swings and roundabouts.

"I give high marks to our crew all week. If I was to rate my own performance I would give myself six. I would say that Michele Ivaldi did awesome work sliding in to Juan Vila’s shoes. He is a great tactician in his own right and a great navigator. It was a big ask for him to come in and fill in for Juan Vila.

"When you talk about navigators then without doubt Juan Vila is the best in the world. But Michele is also a great tactician and it is good to have the tactical support too. And I am quite confident that if we had Michele doing tactics and Juan navigating this week we would have had the same result.”
