After a long and busy night at sea, Igor Simcic’s Esimit Europa 2 confirmed her status as favourite to win line honours. The 100-ft Maxi, the largest boat in the fleet, enjoyed a close tussle with French VO70 Villa Saxe Eiffel in the first half of the leg to the volcanic island of Stromboli, some 110-nm south of Capri.

However, Esimit Europa 2 skippered by Jochen Schümann, rapidly began to build an advantage on the approach to Stromboli. She rounded the active volcano close to 22:00 CEST last night (Monday) and led the rest of the race, crossing the finish line off Capri at 13:16 CEST today. Her elapsed time was 27 hours, 16 minutes and 44 seconds.

At 15:00 CEST, Robertissima III (ITA) and Jethou (GBR) continue to enjoy something of a match race on the final approach to Capri, separated by a mere 6-nm. The Italian Mini Maxi is currently the provisional leader on handicap. The remainder of the 12-strong Volcano Race fleet is progressing slowly in light and variable breeze, spread between Stromboli and the finish off Capri.
