Volvo 70 Black Jack Hits The Water

Pater Harburg, the owner of Black Jack Racing, Queensland’s highest profile grand prix yacht racing team, has acquired the current generation Volvo 70 previously known as Telefonica, the Spanish entrant in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean.

The boat was launched in Brisbane over the weekend by motor racing legend Sir Jack Brabham, a close friend of Harbug's, who christened the boat with champagne. Since arriving from Europe in March the boat has been undergoing modifications in time for her Australian offshore debut in the Audi Sydney Gold Coast race later this month.

For her maiden sail the crew headed out into the open waters of Moreton Bay where they hoisted sails in light winter conditions. Tacking and gybing with dagger boards and a canting keel is a new experience for the 15-strong crew as they practised several few manoeuvres.

The original Volvo 70 sails that came with the boat will be used and over time the full sail wardrobe will be replaced. The boat will line up for this year's Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on December 26.
