34th America's Cup - Panel Appointed and Review Underway

Since Andrew 'Bart' Simpson's tragic death last Thursday onboard the Artemis Racing Team's AC72 during a routine training session the team's CEO Paul Cayard is MIA and everyone including the media has been asked not to speculate about the cause of the accident until a full investigation is conducted by the America's Cup Event Authority and San Francisco Police Department.

The comments made by helmsman Nathan Outteridge to his father Tony that were later published in The Newcastle Herald that "he heard a cracking noise and the boat went on its side. Before it capsized it snapped in half, Nathan described it as folding like a taco shell" have since been flatly refuted by Nathan Outteridge in an official statement released by Artemis Racing. Outteridge's statement completely contradicts what his father was quoted as saying.

But speculation is all anybody has done since this unfortunate incident with the main debate focused on the boat's design and construction history, safety and what the future holds for these mega catamarans and the America's Cup itself.

At a media conference today in San Francisco the America’s Cup organisers announced that a panel of sailing and safety experts lead by Regatta Director Iain Murray have been appointed to review the training and racing of the AC72 yachts in the America's Cup. The Review Committee will collaborate with the US Coast Guard in order to hand down their recommendations within the next two weeks.

As the yachting fraternity continues to mourn the loss of an exceptionally talented sailor the show must go on and organisers confirm that the event is on track. That's only seven weeks until the Louis Vuitton Series commences on July 4 with just three teams vying for the chance to to challenge defender Oracle Team USA.
