Wild Thing's Skipper Grant Wharington and his crew were delighted with the result after spending much of the race in a cat and mouse battle with Black Jack who finished 22 minutes behind after over twenty nine hours of racing.

While Wild Thing secured the lead after departing Moreton Bay on Good Friday, a navigational error handed Black Jack the early advantage. After backtracking and correctly rounding the missed mark, Wild Thing powered up the Fraser Coast to overtake Peter Harburg's sleek Reichel Pugh 66.

As Wild Thing celebrated their Citizens of Gladstone win, the rest of the fleet continued their battle for the overall race win and the chance to get their hands on the coveted Courier Mail Cup.

Previous winners, Wedgetail, are currently well positioned to take handicap honours however it depends on tonight  conditions. Two local Gladstone boats, Wistari and Immigrant, are also keen to get their hands on the trophy.
