Hot and Light At Copa del Rey, Palma - Day Four

Palma de Mallorca, 19 July, 2012

Light wind conditions prevailed on day four of the 31st Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre, that saw some of the tightest and most tactical racing so far. Jochen Schuemann's All4One racked up back-to-back wins in today's two races, to snare the top spot in IRC1 after seven races. RÁN holds onto her lead although Shockwave and Stig won a race apiece while Alegre retains her lead in the Soto 40s, increasing her  advantage over Iberdrola by seven points.

The wind pattern of around 15 knots from the southwest-West that prevailed the three past days switched to a Southerly-Southwesterly light breeze of around six knots at the beginning of races today, gradually picking up and reaching 12 to 14 knots in the early afternoon. Demanding conditions and very tactical racing in a very decisive day in which discards came into effect in the X-35 and J-80 divisions.

The wind was best on the left hand side of the racecourse for the first IRC 0 race. RÀN didn't perform at her best in today's first race and finished third but improved by one point in race two with a second. The Swedish boat now has to a six point advantage over  Shockwave, which clocked up a first in the first race followed by a third in the second.

Italian boat Stig finished on a higher note with a second and first but the JV 72 footer owned by Alessandro Rombelli has suffered greatly from scoring two DNF's yesterday and is now fourth overall . “Highland Fling” was forced to abandon in the first race after ripping a spinnaker and didn't manage to start the second race.

Racing in IRC 1 was marked by a tete a tete between All4One and Audi Azzurra Sailing Team which went the French-German team's way. The TP52 skippered by Jochen Schumann clinched back-to-back wins by dominating both races from start to finish and lead overall.

The light breeze didn't benefit Azzurra Sailing Team, and things got worse for the Italo-Argentinean team as they were forced to make a penalty turn after a port-starboard situation. All4One climbs to the top spot, Guillermo Parada's Audi Azzurra lies second, and Tony Langley's Gladiator is just two points behind in third.

It was a gun-to-gun win for Alegre today in the first race of the Soto 40 division thanks to good boat speed and being able to capitalise on mistakes made by the rest of the fleet in the tricky tactical conditions. Alegre finished sixth in the second race which should have favoured second placed Iberdrola, but after two major blunders today they are now seven points behind Alegre. Bigamist was one of the best performing teams of the day, snatching a second place and a bullet to lift their overall standing to fourth position.

There were no changes in the RI 1 classification, with Swanderfull retaining her lead of a seven point advantage over Earlybird. While the battle between the two favourites continue, Rats on Fire was able to reduce their margin by 1.5 points. The two time Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre champion is in third, and fifteen points behind is Grupo Clínico Luis Senís. In the RI2 class the consistent Power Plate is currently in first first followed by Movistar.

Discards came into effect today in the J-80 and X-35 division after their eighth race. The J-80 division sees Carlos Martinez's Mapfre increase her lead thanks to her rival Nextel being over the line in the first race and finishing fourth place in the second, whereas Martinez finished the day with a second and a first. The victory in the first race went to Nilfisk but could only manage a seventh in the second race. Nextel is second overall followed by Nilfisk who is twenty points clear of their nearest rival, Campaign.

In the X-35 yesterday's leader Hotelplan – Spirit of Nerina could only manage an eleventh and an eighth place in today's two races. First  now Margherita – Jsteam de Roberto Mazzucato thanks to a first and a second, while Finnish Samuli Liesti's Audi Ultra is in second.

Two more windward-leeward races will be held tomorrow and discards will come into effect for divisions racing in compensated time.
