Lahana the defending line honours champion was locked into a close race with the smaller Brisbane sloop Black Jack (Mark Bradford) and the race record holder Grant Wharington’s Wild Thing when the three yachts tracked a course towards the navigation mark to enter the North West shipping channel.
Rob Hanna's JV IRC52 Shogun V was also well placed sailing in clear wind in fourth place and holding a strong position to remain in the challenge to win on handicap.

Wind conditions of a light 10 knot southerly provided the fleet of 45 yachts with a colourful spinnaker start however the race leaders will need to pick up the pace when they enter the open ocean waters off Caloundra later today to hold any chance setting a new race record.
They have a target time to finish before 7-40-50 am tomorrow to eclipse the present 20 hour 40 minute 50 second record set by Grant Wharington’s maxi in 2004.
