Volvo Ocean Race Fleet Preparing For War

The six boats in the Volvo Ocean Race face their biggest offshore challenge as the fleet head into the infamous Southern Ocean as part of the 6,750 nautical mile leg to Itajai in Brazil.

Before the fleet depart on Sunday, the Auckland in-port race takes place on Saturday with hundreds of spectator boats expected to line the course, with thousands of fans watching from the Race Village in the Viaduct.

Race organisers have set a course littered with challenges in Waitemata Harbour, including submerged rocks, wind shadows, a strong tide and four turning marks.
