Oxley Reckons Solomons Were Tricky - Volvo Ocean Race News Snippet

CAMPER navigator Will Oxley, one of the two Aussies among the crew together with skipper Chris Nicholson, said that the biggest challenge he faced during Leg 4 was negotiating the passage through the Solomon Islands.

Only three teams chose to go through the islands while the other half of the fleet steered clear hoping to gain an advantage by staying outside. But Oxley was confident. Having spent 18 years working on the Great Barrier Reef as a marine biologist he is pretty cluey when it comes to plotting through complex tropical reef ecosystems.

"The biggest challenge about going through the Solomons was trying to avoid the wind shadow at Guadalcanal. There was a lot of planning involved in that and I was very cautious as we had to be very careful in order to avoid hitting any reefs," Oxley said.
