Sponsored by AFX Capital and Eurograni SpA, the Italian-based AFX Capital Racing Team is owned by Massimo Barranco, one of the largest wheat and cereal traders in Italy. Barranco has successfully  campaigned his competitive X-Yacht, the X-41, Extra 1, over the past few European seasons.

“The first thing that attracted me to the circuit was the racing format. It is very similar to the rules of the America’s Cup, with the match racing and fleet racing. I also admire the high quality of competitive sailors and the technical competition,” Barranco said of his decision to join the class.

“The RC44s are building a very competitive class, the boats are fast and the Tour is visiting some beautiful venues this year. I am convinced that the class will continue to improve and grow into the future and it is a project I am excited about being involved with,” he added.

Barranco has acquired the Italian RC44 which previously raced as Mascalzone Latino and winner of the final event of the 2010 Championship Tour in Miami. Italian Olympic sailor Gabriele Bruni will assist in building the team together with his brother, champion tactician Francesco Bruni, who recently finished second in the 2011 World Match Racing Tour.

The yacht is currently in transit to Puerto Calero in Lanzarote where the new team will train in preparation for their debut in the 2012 season's first regatta.
