Quantum Rule Day 3 - TP52 Worlds

Despite more delays due to lack of wind defending world champions Quantum Racing proved who's boss today by dominating race four from whoa to go at the Audi TP52 World Championships.

Gladiator took second and Paramount Park Murcia team finished third. This result sees all three top finishers today locked in a tussle on 10 points each in the overall results. With their second race win in these very gentle conditions Quantum Racing lead on tie-break and on track to defend their 2010 World Title.

“Our goal was to get through these light airs days leading the regatta, three of us are tied and we won the tie breaker right now, so we are pretty much where we want to be right now,” said Quantum Racing’s project manager Ed Reynolds. “Hopefully the averages kind of work out for us. That is our focus.”

With only one race sailed today the race committee set the race area to the north in the Secca dei Tre Monti for the first time this regatta and Bomb Alley’s confines of the Arzachena Gulf, rewarded the fleet with the only race-able breeze to be found.

Quantum Racing lead by the first windward mark ahead of Container, Gladiator and RAN. After a lacklustre start Gladiator showed good boat speed in the light, rising from sixth early on the first beat to round the top mark third.

After the fleet all gybed set at the WW1 mark, Container chose to gybe back earlier on the run and lost wind pressure compared to Gladiator. Paramount Park Murcia, with Ross MacDonald calling tactics, improved to a third with a good final run to pip Container on the final approach to the finish line.

After three days of tricky breezes the muscular Mistral is expected for Friday with winds over 30 knots anticipated, perhaps dropping to a difficult 10-15kts with an awkward residual choppy sea for Saturday’s final day of racing.
