RÁN Fire Up The Fleet on Day 1 - Audi MedCup Barcelona

RÁN put in their best performance today in the windward-leeward courses of the Audi MedCup Circuit when they notched up a second and first place to take the overall lead in the Conde de Godo City of Barcelona Trophy Regatta.

A light 7-9 knot southerly sea breeze kept all crews on their toes including current circuit leaders Quantum Racing who worked hard for their third place in race one. Ed Baird and his crew managed to fend of their main rivals Audi Azzurra Sailing Team and Container.

Bribon continued their winning ways to claim victory in the first windward-leeward, holding off RÁN and Quantum Racing who took third. Bribon's Canadian tactician Ross MacDonald, who won an Olympic bronze medalist here in 1992, and Dutch navigator Marcel Van Triest positioned Bribon on the favoured right, inshore side of the first upwind and after starting on the right hand end of the start line. This set them up to lead at each mark.

The breeze built to 7-11 knots for the second race and shifted more to the right. RÁN elected to stay further offshore on the first run staying on the right downwind paid off when they grabbed the lead at the leeward gate. Audi Sailing Team powered by ALL4ONE's game plan came unstuck after they rounded the top mark in second and were forced to peel to a replacement kite downwind after suffering a small rip in their gennaker. They fell further back in the fleet when they were penalised for their mainsheet skidding over the buoy and were required to do a penalty turn.

RÁN lead the entire race and kept Quantum Racing at bay right to the finish line.

“ I think that we came here with a different mindset than we did before. After winning the Mini Maxi Championships we were really happy with how we performed and that has boosted our confidence. This is the last event and our crew is going to fight to improve and try to have a good time racing. I also think that we were not so stressed coming into this event and that´s important,” RÁN's owner Niklas Zennström said.
