Solid Start For Synergy at MedCup in Cartagena

There was no stopping the Russians today when Synergy Sailing Team took out the first race of the Region of Murcia-Cartagena Trophy regatta in light challenging conditions.

The rugged cliffs off Cartagena provided a stunning backdrop for the crews who sweltered under their canopies in the Spanish heat until the AP flag was dropped and racing commenced three hours behind schedule in fickle light breezes.  Synergy's tactician Rod Dawson (NZL), helm Eugeniy Neugodnikov (RUS) and navigator Francesco Mongelli (ITA) capitalised on their strong start  to gain speed in the very gentle air ahead of a fiercely competitive fleet.

Synergy lead the race from the first windward mark, ahead of Jose Cusi’s Copa del Rey winning Spanish boat Bribon and both boats increased their lead on the second beat thanks to a right hand wind shift. Synergy was never threatened and got the got ahead of Bribon and Quantum Racing (USA) crossed the finish line in third. Due to the delays and light 5-7 knot wind only one race was contested and organisers will endeavour to make up a race over the course of the event.

Light winds are expected to continue over the next couple of days.
