August 15, 2011

The French 140 foot trimaran Maxi Banque Populaire (FRA) skippered by Loick Peyron has set a new outright multihull race record for the Rolex Fastnet Race when she reached Plymouth this evening at 19:48:46, for an elapsed time of 1 day, 8 hours, 48 minutes (32 hrs, 48 mins), and with an average speed around the course of 18.5 knots.

In the process, skipper Loick Peyron broke the race record of 1 day, 16 hours, 27 minutes he previously set in 1999 aboard his 60 foot trimaran Fujcolor (FRA).

Maxi Banque Populaire holds the world record for the most number of miles covered by a sailing boat in one day - 908.2 miles, roughly one and a half times the length of the Rolex Fastnet Race.
