Aussie Team For Audi MedCup Soto 40 Series

The Audi MedCup Circuit has been peppered by Aussie and Kiwis over the years but at the Region of Murcia Trophy in Cartagena, Spain in a few weeks the first ever fully Australian team, 'Soto 40 Team Australia' will line up to race the Class president’s 'Patagonia' at the southern Spanish venue.

Eleven Aussies, mostly from Western Australia, will head to Cartagena for the fourth event of the five Trophy regattas joining the 40 Series. The new Soto 40 One Design has been a success in this debut year, guaranteeing a very bright and promising future into 2012 and beyond.

The all-Aussie team is sponsored by Perth winemaker, Mulberry Estate who will be with the team in Murcia, to research doing a full campaign in 2012. Brent Fowler from North Sails in Western Australia has worked closely with Longitude Yachts (the Australian dealer for the Soto 40 Class) in making it a reality for an Aussie team to compete on the Audi MedCup Circuit.

"The racing doesn't get any better than this. Warm weather, the local Levant wind and challenging seas and outstanding facilities, the Audi MedCup really knows how to turn on a good show. With the live web TV coverage of each race we've already seen how fast these boats go and hope we get the chance to chase down leader of the series 'Iberdrola' when we get there," Fowler said.

"This isn't about a one regatta hit, but we hope it's a real taster for the future. We will have our sponsors from Mulberry Estate with us and researching the possibility of staging a full campaign for 2012."

The team will arrive in Cartagena three days prior to the start of the regatta to familiarise themselves with the boat.

"We've all spent a lot of time racing similar yachts but we're very excited about learning the ropes on this new world standard for fast OD Class racing. We look forward to putting in a solid effort and becoming involved in this amazing Circuit. It's half-way around the world away from Australia so this isn't just a idea we came up with overnight."
