Audi Azzurra Sailing Team have placed third at the first event of the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit.
Container were second just one point ahead and Quantum Racing ran away with the winner's trophy.

While Azzurra, who represent the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, showed a fighting spirit they paid a high price for their mistakes. Today they suffered two major technical problems.

A float from a fishing net got caught on the rudder during the leeward leg of the first race and the crew were forced to battle it out with Synergy and ALL4ONE for sixth place after floundering at the back of the fleet for most of the race.

In the day's second race, the final of the Cascais Trophy, Azzurra lead Quantum who sat right on the Italian's tail as they rounded the windward mark together and sprinted on the downwind run. Spectators witnessed an exciting match-race in over 20 knots of breeze before disaster struck Azzurra at the gate  when the retriever line for the spinnaker became entangled in the sock.

Azzurra dropped back to fifth place but managed to pass their closest rival, Container, at the finish line. A fourth place wasn't enough and they missed out on taking second place overall by just one point.

"It's a third place that leaves us a little bitter. We are aware that we could have done better both during the week and today. My congratulations go to Quantum, who raced perfectly, but in Marseille we will be even more combative and determined," said Azzurra's strategist Vasco Vascotto.

"Over the week we experienced minor problems in most areas," tactician Francesco Bruni explained. "But that means we can avoid repeating the same mistakes in Marseille. What really stood out here was Quantum's superiority, but this is only the start of the season and we shouldn't jump to any hasty conclusions."

Skipper Guillermo Parada concluded: "We had a negative day today, despite having led the fleet at certain points, we know we have a long way to go to catch up with deserving winners Quantum and we are fully concentrated on our objectives for the season. We will come out fighting in Marseille."
